tye.yaml schema

tye.yaml is the configuration file format for tye. This document describes briefly the set of supported configuration settings and elements.

We also provide a JSON Schema which can be used by certain editors for completion and validation. See instructions here.

Terms

application: The whole application, (usually) includes multiple services. Maps conceptually to a tye.yaml or a .sln.

service: An individual project, container, or process. Part of an application.

project: A kind of service, specified by a buildable and runnable .NET project.

container: A kind of service that can be run locally using tye by launching a container using Docker.

executable: A kind of service that the can be run locally using an arbitrary command-line.

Root Properties

name (string)

Configures the name of the application. This will appear in some Kubernetes labels right now, but not many other places.

If the name name is not specified, then the lowercased directory name containing the tye.yaml file will be used as the default.

registry (Registry)

Allows storing the name of the container registry and optional credentials secret in configuration.

namespace (string)

Allows configuring the Kubernetes namespace used by commands that operate on Kubernetes. If unconfigured, Tye will use the namespace of the current Kubernetes context.

The namespace specified in tye.yaml can be overridden at the command line.

💡 Use kubectl config view --minify --output 'jsonpath={..namespace}' to view the current namespace.

network (string)

Allows configuring the Docker network used for tye run.

If a network is configured, then all services running in containers will connect to the specified network. Otherwise a Docker network will be created with a generated name, and used to connect all containers.

dashboardPort (int)

Allows configuring the dashboard port used for tye run.

If a --port is provided via the CLI, it will be used instead.

If no --port argument or dashboardPort value is specified, Tye will use the default port (8000), or a random port if the default port is in use.

ingress (Ingress[])

Specifies the list of ingresses.

services (Service[]) required

Specifies the list of services. Applications must have at least one service.

solution (string)

Indicates the solution file (.sln) or filter (.slnf) to use when building project-based services in watch mode. If omitted, those services will be built individually. Specifying the solution [filter] can help reduce repeated builds of shared libraries when in watch mode.

Registry

Allows storing the name of the container registry in configuration. This is used when building and deploying images for two purposes:

  • Determining how to tag the images
  • Determining where to push the images

If this is not specified in configuration, interactive deployments will prompt for it.

Registry Properties

name (string) required

The name could be a DockerHub username (exampleuser) or the hostname of a container registry (example.azurecr.io).

pullSecret (string)

Specifies the optional secret, that Kubernetes should get the credentials from to pull the image from a private registry.

Service

Service elements appear in a list within the services root property.

Services must be one of the following kind:

  • project
  • container
  • executable
  • external

The kind will be inferred based on the properties that are set. Right now there is very little error checking or validation to help enforce this.

Service Properties

name (string) required

The service name. Each service must have a name, and it must be a legal DNS name: (a-z + -). Specifically, the service name must:

  • Contain at most 63 characters
  • Contain only alphanumeric characters or ‘-’
  • Start with an alphanumeric character
  • End with an alphanumeric character

project (string)

The relative path from tye.yaml to a .csproj or .fsproj.

Including a project entry marks the service as a project:

  • It will build and run locally using the .NET project during development.
  • It will be packaged and deployed during deployments.

image (string)

The name and optional tag of an image that can be run using Docker.

Including image marks the service as a container:

  • It will pulled and run locally using Docker during development.
  • It will not be deployed during deployment.

dockerFile (string)

The Dockerfile to build from. Uses the name of the service as the name of the image. Only supported for tye run currently.

dockerFileArgs (string[])

Build arguments to use when building a Docker image. This is only used when dockerFile is specified.

dockerFileContext (string)

Path to the Dockerfile Context to run docker build against. This is only used when dockerFile is specified as well.

executable (string)

The path (or filename) of an executable to launch.

Including executable marks the service as an executable:

  • It will run locally during development.
  • It will not be deployed during deployment.

external (bool)

Including external: true marks the service as external:

  • It will not run anything locally during development.
  • It will not be deployed during deployment.

External services are useful to provide bindings without any run or deployment behavior.

env (EnvironmentVariable[] | string[])

A list of environment variable mappings for the service. Does not apply when the service is external.

env_file (string[])

A list of files from which environment variables are taken. Does not apply when the service is external.

args (string)

Command-line arguments to use when launching the service. Does not apply when the service is external.

replicas (integer)

The number of replicas to create. Does not apply when the service is external.

build (bool)

Whether to build the project. Defaults to true. Only applies when the service is a project.

workingDirectory (string)

The working directory to use when launching. Only applies when the service is an executable.

bindings (Binding[])

A list of bindings exposed by the service. Bindings represent protocols provided by a service.

include (string)

A path to another tye.yaml to be used by the application.

repository (string)

A reference to a repository that will be cloned and used by the application. By default, it is a string that would be passed after git clone.

cloneDirectory (string)

The directory to clone to. If unspecified, tye will clone into the .tye/deps relative to where tye is started.

azureFunction (string)

A path to a folder which contains an azure function project.

pathToFunc (string)

An optional path to the Azure Functions host to be used.

Environment Variables

EnvironmentVariable elements appear in a list inside the env property of a Service.

Environment Variable Properties

name (string) required

The name of the environment variable.

value (string) required

The value of the environment variable.

Environment variables can also be provided using a compact syntax (similar to that of docker-compose).

Using the compact syntax, you provide environment variable name and value via a single string, separated by a = sign.

In the absence of an = sign, the value of the environment variable will be taken from the operating system/shell.

Environment Variables Files

string elements appear in a list inside the env_file property of a Service.

These strings reference .env files from which the environment variables will be injected.

Build Properties

Configuration that can be specified when building a project. These will be passed in as MSBuild properties when building a project. It appears in the list buildProperties of a Service.

Build Properties Definition

name (string) required

The name of the build property.

value (string) required

The value of the build property.

Binding

Binding elements appear in a list inside the bindings property of a Service.

Bindings represent protocols exposed by a service. How bindings are specified can affect both:

Bindings should either provide:

  • A connectionString
  • A protocol
  • A port

Binding Properties

name (string)

The name of the binding. Binding names are optional and should be omitted when a service contains a single binding. If a service provides two or more bindings, then they all must have names.

Names are part of the service discovery protocol.

connectionString (string)

The connection string of the binding. Connection strings should be used when connecting to the binding requires additional information besides a URL. Service discovery treats connection string as a single opaque value and will ignore other properties like port.

As an example, connecting to a hosted redis using authentication requires a URL as well as username and password. Using a connection string is typical for databases or anything that requires authentication.

protocol (string)

Specifies the protocol used by the binding. The protocol is used in service discovery to construct a URL. It's safe to omit the protocol when it's not needed to connect to the service. As an example, connecting to redis without authentication only requires a hostname and port.

host (string)

Specifies the hostname used by the binding. The protocol is used in service discovery to construct a URL. It's safe to omit the host when localhost should be used for local development.

routes (string[])

Specifies the list of additional routes to show in Bindings on the Dashboard for easy access. Example route value: /swagger.

port (string)

Specifies the port used by the binding. The port is used in service discovery to construct a URL.

internalPort (string deprecated, use containerPort instead)

Specifies the port used by the binding when running in a docker container.

containerPort (string)

Specifies the port used by the binding when running in a docker container.

autoAssignPort (bool deprecated, by default a port will be auto assigned if no connection string was specified)

Specifies that the port should be assigned randomly. Defaults to false. This is currently only useful for projects - where the tye host will automatically infer bindings with autoAssignPort: true

Volumes

Volume elements appear in a list inside the volumes property of a Service. Each volume specifies the local files or directories should be mapped into the docker container.

source (string)

The local path.

name (string)

A named docker volume.

target (string) required

The destination path within the container.

Ingress

Ingress elements appear in a list within the ingress root property.

Each ingress element represents an HTTP (L7) network proxy, capable of accepting public traffic from the internet:

  • In development: a local proxy is used for testing purposes
  • In deployed applications: a real load-balancer/proxy accepting traffic from outside the cluster is used

This example configures a single ingress named example that routes traffic to app-a or app-b based on the Host header. The port 8080 will be used during local development.

Ingress Properties

name (string) required

The name of the ingress.

bindings (IngressBinding)

The bindings of the ingress service when running locally. Ignored for deployed applications.

rules (IngressRule)

The rules used to route traffic for the ingress.

IngressBinding

IngressBinding elements appear in an array within the bindings property of an Ingress element. The bindings of an ingress specify the ports of the ingress service when running locally. Bindings are ignored when deploying applications.

In this example the binding specifies that the ingress service should listen for HTTP on port 8080 when running locally for development.

IngressBinding Properties

name (string)

The name of the binding.

port (integer)

The port of the binding.

protocol (string)

The protocol (http or https).

ip (string)

The optional IP adress to bind to. Can be '*' for all addresses. Default is localhost.

IngressRule

IngressRule elements appear in an array within the rules property of the Ingress element. Rules configure the routing behavior of the ingress proxy.

Rules can configure routing based on path-prefix, or based on host (HTTP Host header) or both.

  • A rule without a path is considered to match all paths, which is the same as specifying path: '/'
  • A rule without a host is considered to match all hosts.

IngressRule Properties

service (string) required

The service to route traffic to. Must be the name of a service that is part of this application.

path (string)

The path-prefix to match. Matching is case-insensitive.

The path must begin with /:

  • /mypath is value
  • mypath is invalid

The path may end with a trailing slash - the behavior is the same whether or not a trailing slash appears.

The path /mypath or /mypath/ will match:

  • /mypath
  • /mypath/
  • /MYPATH/something/else

host (string)

The host to match.

preservePath (boolean)

Whether to preserve the matched path prefix when routing to a specific service. By default, path-prefixes are trimmed (preservePath is false). For example, if a path consisted of /serviceA/foo and an ingress rule including a match on /serviceA, the /serviceA portion would be trimmed when routing to the backend service, resulting in the path /foo. By setting preservePath to true, the /serviceA portion would be kept when routing to the backend service.

Liveness and Readiness

liveness and readiness elements appear within the properties of a Service.

Tye uses the liveness and readiness to probe the replicas of a service.
Each replica of a service is probed independently.

Replica State

Each replica of a service has three states it can be in

  • Started - A replica is in this state when it has just been started, and hasn't been probed yet.
  • Healthy - A replica is in this state when it passes the liveness probe, but not the readiness probe.
  • Ready - A replica is in this state when it passes both the liveness and readiness probes.

liveness and readiness have similar schemas, but have different meaning to the life cycle of the service.

If a liveness probe fails for a replica, Tye restarts that replica.
If a readiness probe fails for a replica, Tye doesn't restart that replica, but demotes the state of that replica from Ready to Healthy, until the probe becomes successful again.

Healthy replicas are kept alive but Tye doesn't route traffic to them. (Neither via the service binding, nor via an ingress that routes to that service)

liveness and readiness are optional, and may only be defined once per Service.

Liveness and Readiness Example

In this example, the webapi service has both a liveness probe and a readiness probe.
The liveness probe periodically calls the /healthy endpoint in the service and the readiness probe periodically calls the /ready endpoint in the service.

Probe Properties

(This refers both to the liveness probe and the readiness probe, since both have similar properties)

http (HttpProber) required

The properties of the HttpProber that tell Tye how to probe a replica using HTTP.

period (integer)

The period (in seconds) in which Tye probes a replica. (Default value: 1, Minimum value: 1)

timeout (integer)

The time (in seconds) that Tye waits for a replica to respond to a probe, before the probe fails. (Default value: 1, Minimum value: 1)

successThreshold (integer) only relevant for readiness probe

Tye will wait for this number of successes from prober, before marking a Healthy replica as Ready. (Default value: 1, Minimum value: 1)

failureThreshold (integer)

Tye will wait for this number of failures from the prober, before giving up. (Default value: 3, Minimum value: 1)

Giving up in the context of liveness probe means killing the replica, and in the context of readiness probe it means marking a Ready replica as Healthy.

HttpProber

HttpProber appears within the http property of the liveness and readiness elements.
The HttpProber tells Tye which endpoint, port, protocol and which headers to use to probe the replicas of a service.

In this example, the liveness probe defines an HttpProber that will probe the replicas of the service at the /healthy endpoint (HTTP GET), on port 8080, using HTTP (unsecure), and providing two headers (HeaderA and HeaderB) with the values ValueA and ValueB respectively.

HttpProber Properties

path (string) required

Tye will probe the replicas of the service at that path, using the GET method.

port (integer)

The service binding port that is used to probe the replicas of the service.

protocol (string)

The service binding protocol that is used to probe the replicas of the server. (i.e. http/https)

Note:
If neither port nor protocol are provided, Tye selects the first binding of the service.
If just port is provided, Tye selects the first binding with that port.
If just protocol is provided, Tye selects the first binding with that protocol.
If both port and protocol are provided, Tye selects the first biding with that port and protocol.

headers ((name, value)[])

Array of headers that are sent as part of the HTTP request that probes the replicas of the service.

Extensions

Each of the Tye extensions have their own custom configuration schema.

Dapr

For the Dapr extension, the available properties closely follow those found on the dapr run command line. The Dapr extension allows many properties to be set and/or overridden on a service-by-service basis using the services dictionary.

The following properties are annotated as follows:

  • extension-level: Can only be set at the root of the extension configuration.
  • service-level: Can only be set for a specific service within the services dictionary.
  • overridable: Can be set at both the root of the extension configuration or be overridden for a specific service within the services dictionary.

app-id (string) service-level

The ID for your application, used for service discovery.

app-max-concurrency (integer) overridable

The concurrency level of the application (otherwise unlimited).

app-protocol (string) overridable

The protocol (gRPC or HTTP) Dapr uses to talk to the application (with HTTP being the default).

app-ssl (boolean) overridable

Enable HTTPS when Dapr invokes the application.

components-path (string) overridable

The path of the components directory. If relative, is relative to the root directory of the application (i.e. of the tye.yaml).

config (string) overridable

The name of the Dapr configuration file (without extension). Assumed to be relative to the components-path directory, if specified, else the components folder in the root directory of the application (i.e. of the tye.yaml).

enabled (boolean) service-level

Whether a Dapr sidecar is created for the service. If true, a sidecar is created even if the default for the service type would be not to create one. If false, a sidecar is not created even if the default for the service type would be to create one.

enable-profiling (boolean) overridable

Enable pprof profiling via an HTTP endpoint.

grpc-port (integer) service-level

The gRPC port for Dapr to listen on.

http-max-request-size (integer) overridable

The maximum size of an HTTP request body in MB.

http-port (integer) service-level

The HTTP port for Dapr to listen on.

log-level (string) overridable

The log verbosity. Valid values are: debug, info, warn, error, fatal, and panic.

metrics-port (integer) service-level

The port used to collect Dapr metrics.

placement-port (integer) service-level

The port of the Dapr placement service.

profile-port (integer) service-level

The port for the Dapr profile servicer to listen on.

services ((string, object)[]) extension-level

The dictionary in which service-level configuration can be set.
